How do I book my first Mammogram?
What to expect and how to book your first screening mammogram
Friday 5th July 2019
At The Harley Street Breast Clinic we see many young women for their first mammogram. Women can self refer for a screening mammogram from the age of 40 and have an annual mammogram without the need for a doctors referral.
We see many women who feel apprehensive at their first mammogram screening. Some women feel worried about having a new medical procedure or anxiety about the results. Whatever the reason, most women prefer to book their first screening mammogram at a time when we have a Consultant Breast Radiologist on site for an immediate read. The patient will have her mammogram and the Consultant Breast Radiologist will check the diagnostic images and feed back their medical opinion of the first read.
All screening mammograms at The Harley Street Breast Clinic are double read by two Consultant Breast Radiologists, therefore this first read is provisional and a final result letter will follow. Our latest audit showed the two radiologists agreed more than 99% of the time, so we know we can be very confident of this provisional first read. If anything is flagged on the mammogram, the patient will have the recommended next steps explained whether this be additional mammogram views, ultrasound or ultrasound biopsies, and these can be completed on the same day. Appointments are usually under an hour, however please book out around 2 hours from your diary so if these extra tests are required, you have the flexibility to have them done.
If you would like to book in for your first screening mammogram, please contact our medical secretaries on 02079086071 or email THSBC.Query@unilabs.com and ask to receive your results on the day.
